This section describes the processes involved to use WS_FTP, a popular FTP program that we at byron.com recommend. The latest version may be downloaded from ipswitch.

When WS_FTP is opened the first window
displays what is called "session properties":

  1. Profile Name: Domain Name
  2. Host Name/Addresss: Domain Name OR IP Address
  3. Host Type: Automatic detect
  4. User ID: Username
  5. Password: Password (Make sure the "Save Pwd" box is checked.)
  6. Click the "Apply" button
  7. Click the "OK" button
  • Your session window will appear

  • The left side of the main window is the Local System on your computers hard drive.
  • The right half of the main window is the Remote System on our server (your webspace).
  • In each half of the main window there are two list boxes.
  • The upper box is a list of directories while the lower half is a list of files.
  • Now all you have to do is locate the files on your Local System (or hard drive).
  • Highlight the files you wish to upload to your webspace (html needs to be transferred in ASCII, images need to be transferred in Binary mode), and click on the right arrow between the Local System and Remote System to transfer the files to your appropriate server directory.
  • After the transfer is complete, double-check with your browser of choice to ensure the transfer was successful.
  • Note: to refresh in Netscape hold down the [ shift ] key and click "refresh"... In Internet Explorer hold down the [ ctrl ] key and click refresh.
